Today, I want to share five things I wish every patient knew about preventing dental problems. Because honestly, the best dentistry is the dentistry we never have to do.
First, pain is a late symptom. A lot of people think, ‘If nothing hurts, everything must be fine.’ But by the time a tooth starts aching or your gums are bleeding regularly, a cavity or gum disease may already be well underway. That’s why routine checkups are so important, we can find problems long before you feel them.
Second, technique matters more than force. Scrubbing your teeth harder doesn’t make them cleaner. In fact, it can wear away enamel and cause gum recession. A soft-bristled toothbrush, gentle circular motions, and a full two minutes twice a day is the winning combination.
Third, flossing isn’t optional. Your toothbrush only cleans about 60% of your tooth surfaces. The spaces between your teeth are where plaque loves to hide, and that’s often where cavities and gum disease begin.
Fourth, your oral health affects more than your smile. Chronic inflammation and untreated infections in the mouth have been linked to conditions like heart disease and diabetes. Taking care of your teeth is also taking care of your overall health.
And finally, prevention saves you time, money, and discomfort. A regular cleaning, fluoride treatment, or sealant is much easier, and much less expensive, than needing a crown, root canal, or dental implant later on.
At the end of the day, prevention isn’t complicated. Brush well, floss daily, and keep your regular dental appointments. Those small habits today can help you enjoy a healthy smile for years to come!
