On this Dental Minute I wanted to share the importance to Oral Cancer Awareness Month, which is throughout the month of April. While this isn’t the funniest topic, it’s an important one—because early detection can save lives.
Oral cancer affects over 50,000 people in the U.S. every year, but here’s the good news: If caught early, it’s highly treatable. That’s why those regular dental checkups aren’t just about cavities—we’re also checking for anything unusual.
So, what should you watch for? Here are some key signs:
-
A sore that won’t heal
-
Red or white patches in your mouth
-
Persistent pain or numbness
-
Difficulty swallowing or speaking
-
A lump or thickening in your cheek or throat
Want to lower your risk? Avoid tobacco, limit alcohol, eat a healthy diet, and don’t forget the sunscreen—yes, even for your lips! And if something feels off, don’t wait—get it checked.
Oral health is about more than just a great smile—it’s about your overall well-being. That’s why I love providing free screenings and spreading awareness, because catching things early can make all the difference.
So here’s your reminder: Keep up with your checkups, pay attention to any changes, and take care of that smile—it’s the only one you’ve got!
Your health starts with your mouth—so let’s keep it healthy. Happy Oral Cancer Awareness Month!
