I recently came across an article that caught my attention, and I wanted to share it with you. It’s all about how your oral health might be linked to macular degeneration, which is one of the leading causes of vision loss in adults over 60.
A review of seven studies involving more than 149,000 patients suggests that people with gum disease may have a higher risk of developing age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Researchers believe this may be due to the chronic inflammation caused by periodontal disease, which could contribute to inflammation in other areas of the body, including the eyes.
While this doesn’t mean gum disease causes vision problems, it’s another important reminder of how connected our oral health is to our overall well-being. We’ve always known that gum disease affects the heart, blood sugar, and even pregnancy, but now we’re seeing a possible link to our eyesight too.
What can you do?
-
Brush and floss every day
-
Watch for signs of gum disease like redness, swelling, or bleeding
-
Don’t skip your cleanings and checkups—especially if you’re at risk
