In an article published in The New York Times, experts offered five tips on which habits to prevent to protect the teeth.
Experts advised Americans to refrain from chewing on unpopped popcorn kernels, ice and writing utensils like pens — which can chip tooth enamel and crack teeth, leading to a need for root canals, crowns and even tooth removal. The experts also recommended avoiding energy drinks, because they often contain higher levels of enamel-eroding acids than sodas. Americans who consume energy drinks, sodas or coffee should drink or rinse with water once they finish the beverages. Finally, the experts urged Americans to avoid using vapes and fluoride-free toothpastes, which can increase the presence of oral bacteria and lead to plaque and tooth decay.
